The Grandparent Scam

In 2021 we saw an increase in scams that target the older generation. The scammer will call a grandparent pretending to be one of their grandchildren. He/she will tell a story of how they are in very big trouble and need some money urgently.
You are welcome to watch the short video or read the post below.
Here is an example:
“Help me. I was with friends and we’ve been arrested. I can’t get hold of my mom or dad so I called you. I need some money for bail. Please send it now. They put me in a cell with criminals and I am so afraid. The guard just gave me ten minutes for this call and then I have to go back. Please help me. Can you send the money now?”
In the effort to help their beloved grandchild who is in clear and imminent danger, the grandparents send the money.
What should they do?
Criminals will always create a sense of urgency. In this case, the child will be exposed to criminals who could harm them. They will push for the victim to respond without giving them time to think about it.
In this case, the grandparent should first call their grandchild back to confirm what was said. If they can’t they should call the child’s parent to confirm the story.
This scam is low tech – they use a telephone, but very effective. Many people have fallen victim to these scams. Please share this information with your friends and family.
Be safe out there.
